Taken on Sony A58 SLT with DT 16-50 F2.8 SSM

My very first DSLR was the Sony A58. Technically speaking this camera wasn’t even a “true” DSLR as it used what Sony called Single Lens Translucent tech where the mirror lets some light pass through it onto the sensor. That allowed Sony to use an EVF, and phase detection auto-focus by splitting the light between the parallel sensor and a motherboard.

Why did this matter?

The utility of the SLT design was to allow full-time phase-detection autofocus during the use of the electronic viewfinder, rear screen live view, and video recording. With modern digital image sensors using integrated phase detection on the sensor, the SLT design is no longer required to accomplish this goal. The SLT design did avoid having pixels unavailable for image taking.

When I originally owned the camera I had no idea about any of this. I just loved how I was able to get true-to-life images with great colors out of them and how I could focus on just taking the shot and composition.

Why am I buying a 12-year-old camera?

When I let my original A58 go I purchased a very capable Nikon D750 and it fell flat. I never liked the images it output and I lost some inspiration for taking images. Not to say the images were all bad but I have 80% fewer images taken with the D750 that I kept versus the A58. Chasing that pure color and view I had with the Sony I bought a Fuji X-T4 and while I was far more productive keeping double the photos of the D750 it replaced I still hadn’t recaptured that same feeling.

My current setup of cameras is the best I have had for professional work, style, inspiration, and image quality. The M10-R is everything I lost with the Sony, the OM-3 is fun and light and shoots easy to work with video. The A58 is making a comeback as a nostalgic addition. I was able to trade for it using two batteries I no longer needed and I still have a spare battery for it in my collection. This means I can have it, use it, and enjoy it with zero pressure. That’s a nice place to be in life.

What camera do you regret losing?
