I currently use two camera setups. A Nikon Z6III and a Fujifilm GFX 50S II. I’m also limiting myself to two lenses per camera. A standard zoom and a 40ish MM prime.
Why am I doing this?
Limiting choice drives creativity. In my last Fuji kit, I had 6 lenses; after that, my Leica had 4, and I was always looking for more. With this iteration, I want it simple, and when I go out, I want to think more about what I’m shooting versus focal length. I also wanted to pack simply and carry less gear.
Why these two lenses?
Simple, I think. The zoom allows me the freedom to just shoot. Don’t want to walk closer, don’t want to swap lenses, no problem. I’m using the Nikon 24-120 F4 and GFX 35-70 F4.5-5.6 for my zoom needs. Obviously, not the same level of focal length, but I don’t use the cameras in the same manner. For prime lenses, I have the Nikon 40 mm f/2 and the GFX 55 mm f/1.7. Much closer in focal length and my preferred field of view at the moment for a prime.
Has it paid off?
To a small degree. I need more time with the new setups. The 55MM arrived today, so I’m just getting used to it, but so far I am very happy with the handling on the 50S II. Time will tell how well this plan works for me. I tend to buy and trade gear quite a bit. Tell me about your setup. Do you keep it minimal, or do you geek out and get multiple lenses?
Update!
I found myself unable to stop looking at GFX lenses, so I traded the 50S II for the GFX100RF. Just arrived today. So far, no regrets. The 100RF is a beautiful camera.
Update 2!
Returned the GFX100RF. Just didn’t mesh with it. I don’t like to struggle with a camera. We either work together or we don’t. I bought a used Canon G10 instead. That camera and I work really well together right off the bat and it takes beautiful pictures.
