I left most of my social media platforms again. Yes, I said again. I go back every once in a while to see if things improved. Somewhere in me is an optimist who is perpetually disappointed.
Social media used to be just that… social.
Now, it’s a cesspool of ads, politics, data selling, AI slop, and generally an unfun place to hang out. My biggest issue is I can’t escape the news. I barely want news daily, much less all day. I do miss the news only being at certain hours. The all-day news cycle has stressed the world out, created hyperbolic coverage, and generally left the world worse off.
In its heyday, social media was for catching up with old friends, following your favorite band, and sharing silly videos.
Now, social media is big business, selling you as the commodity.
Every major platform sells your data. You are the product, and nothing will change that unless we all leave the platforms. We won’t. There is too much money to be made, brand deals, likes, and other dopamine hits that keep people going. Even introverts have their own social media brand about being an introvert.
So, once again, no more Instagram, Facebook page, or other social media.
The one avenue I will retain is YouTube. Since I control what I watch and can make choices, it’s the least intrusive. I’m sure it will get worse, but for now, I still have a brand account. What are your current thoughts on social media in 2025 and beyond?
